I think the idea he...Thanks for the comment, Foley!

I think the idea here is that many rural poor in China don't have reliable access to the power grid and/or land-line phone service. By offering an inexpensive solar-powered cell phone, they offer the potential for rural communities to leapfrog traditional 20th century infrastructure (extremely expensive & time consuming) directly into 21st century wireless capability and renewable energy. Both solar and wireless avoid the need to lay the thousands of miles of power and fiber optic cables that would otherwise be required.

While I personally see Samsung's new 'Blue Earth' model as 'greenwashing' and slightly gimmicky, ZTE's emphasis on developing a low-cost approach strikes me as what may prove to be an elegant solution to a complex problem.Adminhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11378213821444886480noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2891498374579017649.post-72228630537105838602009-02-19T13:51:00.000-08:002009-02-19T13:51:00.000-08:00This is a great example of leading the US to show ...This is a great example of leading the US to show long term support for alternative energy that will help residents re-coup their investment in solar so that technology is working to help lower their electric bill.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2891498374579017649.post-76466520761007526722009-02-19T09:50:00.000-08:002009-02-19T09:50:00.000-08:00yeah, but what is the real value of a solar phone?...yeah, but what is the real value of a solar phone? When are you going to charge it? Leave it on your car dashboard all day?

The solar charger is useless for most people, who will likely have their phone in their pocket or purse all day...where it won't get charged. then at night, when people typically charge their phone, the solar charge will be useless.

I feel this is a poorly thought out concept.Foleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09529144412430139111noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2891498374579017649.post-15350646460961571142009-02-18T12:56:00.000-08:002009-02-18T12:56:00.000-08:00you should post some info on the environmental imp...you should post some info on the environmental impact and potential economic impact of the materials used to make photovoltaics.Foleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09529144412430139111noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2891498374579017649.post-32108068161906833502009-02-14T21:32:00.000-08:002009-02-14T21:32:00.000-08:00Hey, great blog.
